What is a Bar Crawl? International vs. American Crawl Bar Crawls

Crawling in LoDo

At Denver Pub Crawl, we take pride in our inventive and exciting bar crawl experiences all throughout Denver, but what exactly is a bar crawl? Are there different types of bar crawls? What type of crawl does Denver Pub Crawl do? We are here to explain these common bar crawl questions and show you why Denver Pub Crawl is the crawl to be on.

So, we’d argue that there are two types of bar crawls: 1) “International style” and 2) “American style.” International style usually consists of a group of people meeting at one place or bar and being led on a tour by a guide. Everything from timing, destinations, and information is all planned out by the tour guide. American style is a bit more chaotic. Destinations are undefined, meeting places and meet and greets prove more difficult, and they are often more on national holidays like Christmas, St. Patrick's Day, or Halloween.

“International Style” Pub Crawl

International Style

The “International Style” bar crawl happens around the world and is the most common style. Countries in Europe employ this style for the international travelers and locals that want to explore a new city and meet new friends in an inviting and more personal context.

The more personal experience comes from the smaller group of people on crawls where interactions and conversations come naturally and easily. And with a dedicated host, the logistics of the night are already taken care of so you and your friends can focus on having fun. With these more intimate, guided crawls, it’s much easier to have multiple crawls a month compared to a few big ones a year which provides more fun to anyone visiting the area.

Because international style crawls are heavily planned out and partnered with multiple bars in the area, the bars are able to provide drink deals, exciting environments, and stimulate their business with the help of crawlers. With a more intimate setting with planned bars and games along the way, the international style brings a safe and fun experience no matter the city you are visiting.

Never Stand In Line

American Style

“American Style” bar crawls are found in the United States and are often most commonly associated with what a bar crawl is. They tend to be more undefined in terms of a meeting place or planned bar destinations and turns into more of a free for all.

These types of crawls are usually held on major holidays where hundreds to thousands of people want to go out with their friends in a huge crowd and party. Also, these crawls tend to be cheaper to buy a ticket to which is very enticing. But there are some less desirable features to the American style crawl.

These crawls tend to have total attendees being in the hundreds to thousands where getting into bars and grabbing drinks is very difficult. There is also no defined path for the night out on what bar to go to next or meeting points where the group can meet up together. Not only is the experience inhibited by the sheer number of people, bars tend to be misrepresented in terms of drink deals which can leave your exciting night out a little worse off.
